Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need any prior design skills or education to enroll?
The bootcamp is best suited for those who have a working knowledge of ֱ design. You don't need to have prior experience working as a designer, and you don't need any particular educational qualifications. But to truly benefit from the bootcamp, you should know foundational design concepts, and have basic practical and technical ֱ skills.

If you're new to ֱ design:

If you’re new to ֱ design, you should first sign up for a Professional membership to the Interaction Design Foundation and start out with the following courses: Become a ֱ Designer From Scratch, How To Create a ֱ Portfolio and Human-Computer Interaction or Design Thinking. If you're already a  Professional member, it means you already have access to these courses and you can take them all right away. If you are a Student member, or you plan to sign up for a Student membership, you can take 2 of the courses at a time.

We also recommend learning how to use some commonly used UI/ֱ design software, which you can learn from free official or online tutorials. This will prepare you for portfolio-work, which is the entire focus of the bootcamp.

Already a member of the Interaction Design Foundation? Make use of these pro-tips!

    1. To gain practical skills with ֱ design tools, you can benefit from exclusive discounts on design tools available through our Product Partners.

    2. Want to take the preparatory courses at a faster pace? Skip the weekly wait for new lessons by requesting full access to the courses.

PLEASE NOTE—if you are already enrolled in any of these courses, then you need to drop them before you request full access, which will reset your progress in those courses.

To avail full access to these courses, just copy the following text and email it to—easy peasy!
    Hi Rikke,

I'm interested in enrolling for the bootcamp, and I'd like to prepare for it by taking some courses in full without waiting for each week's lessons. Could you please give me full access to these courses?

    - How To Create a ֱ Portfolio
    - Human-Computer Interaction
    - Design Thinking

    Thanks so much!
  • Can this bootcamp fit around my current job or studies?
Absolutely! This bootcamp is completely online and self-paced. This means you can customize exactly how much time you'll be able to spend on it each day. Working with your mentor, you can put together a plan that works around your schedule, instead of the other way around.

And in the event that you need more than 8 weeks to finish your project, we've got you covered. As long as you're able to fit your available mentor calls and feedback rounds over the extended period you're seeking, there will be no extra charges towards taking extra time to finish your projects.
  • How much time will I have to spend every day on the bootcamp?
The time you spend on the bootcamp per day will boil down to the specific projects on which you work with your mentor. Each portfolio project is unique, so even when two participants choose the same project brief, the final outcome, as well as the time they spend on it, can vary widely.

The good news is that you can customize exactly how much time you'll be able to spend on the bootcamp, and your mentor can put together a plan that works around your schedule, instead of the other way around.

Even more good news—almost all bootcamp participants are full-time professionals, so mentors are well-equipped to help you manage the workload, and they may even have some very helpful tips to share with you!
  • What are my chances to get a job in ֱ design with this bootcamp?
ֱ design is a booming industry and demand for ֱ designers grows each and every year. There are tons of ways to upskill yourself in ֱ design through independent study, but having an expert mentor can give you the kind of direction, guidance and advice that will make your path to success shorter, and much more definite.

This online bootcamp is structured to help you maximize your chances of success in the ֱ job search. This happens through:
    • Personal guidance for your career, including advice towards applying to your dream, real-life ֱ job postings
    • Lifetime access to resources that will help you improve your resume and interview skills
    • Lifetime access to project briefs, so that even after the bootcamp, you can continue applying what you learned towards expanding your portfolio
    • A consultation and networking session with a design recruiter where you will get advice from an actual ֱ hiring expert, and get your portfolio reviewed and critiqued by your peers who are taking the bootcamp alongside you
You'll emerge from the bootcamp with a compelling portfolio, interviewing and negotiation skills, expert advice and most importantly—the confidence to sail through the ֱ job hunt.
  • What kind of projects will I work on?
We offer a comprehensive list of 30+ project briefs for you to choose from. These briefs match the kind of projects real ֱ designers work on, and can help you showcase the kind of work that employers want to see in junior and mid-level design portfolios (trust us, we asked!).

What's more—if you're not satisfied with any of the briefs available to you, you can create your own briefs to work with. Your mentor can guide you with this.

You can also customize the scope of any project brief towards a specialization—so if you want to work on UI Design projects, User Research projects, Design Thinking projects and more, this is completely possible within the scope of the bootcamp. We have mentors who specialize in ֱ, research, web design, branding, visual design, gamification and more, so we'll help you get paired with someone who is an expert in your intended field!
  • What makes this bootcamp different?
Other online bootcamps aim to teach you the full spectrum of ֱ design, in theory and in practice, within the span of a few months. Unfortunately, this means that your learning curve is usually very steep, and you'll have so many different things to learn, but not enough time or opportunity to dive deep enough into important areas.

In this bootcamp, you'll focus exclusively on your portfolio and on developing important skills that will help you land a ֱ design job. No fluff, no compulsory lessons—just deep focus on portfolio and career building for 8 weeks or more. With this unique focus, you'll be less distracted as you build a fantastic new portfolio.

Another key feature of the bootcamp is that you're always in control—you choose your mentor from our shortlist, you choose the project briefs you want to work on and you decide how much time you can spend on the bootcamp. We'll tailor the bootcamp based on your own unique goals, so you'll never be the victim of a one-size-fits-all-approach. And once you've decided exactly what you want to gain from the bootcamp, you can use our detailed project frameworks that will guide you every step of the way.

If you want to pause the bootcamp and resume it later, or defer to a later session, or pace yourself over more than 8 weeks—you've got the option, without any additional costs.

And the icing on the cake? You get the same quality of mentors and expert guidance as other bootcamps, but for a price that's 90% lesser than the industry average price of bootcamps.

Here's a quick comparison of the top online ֱ bootcamps offered:

  • Can I specialize in a particular area of ֱ or UI with this bootcamp?
If you have a specialization in mind, we can tailor the entire bootcamp experience to help you focus on that.

Our mentors have cross-disciplinary experience in many areas of ֱ—including UI design, user research, visual design, gamification, game design, branding and more. We can pair you with a mentor whose specialization matches your interests, and they can tailor a learning plan and project prompts based on your interests.

The bootcamp is also mapped to the Interaction Design Foundation's wide library of courses and resources on various areas of ֱ, so you'll also get to leverage these as you go about the bootcamp.
  • What happens if I fall behind with the schedule?
The bootcamp follows a phased 8-week timeline; however, if you're finding it difficult to wrap up your projects and all your mentor discussions within this period, you can request a free extension. If you need an extension, you should space out your available mentor calls and feedback rounds over the extended period.

You are, of course, free to continue working on your projects, portfolio site and job applications after the bootcamp is over—you’ll have permanent access to the bootcamp resources so that you can keep applying what you learned.
  • What Return on Investment (ROI) can I expect from my investment?
ֱ designer salaries are soaring upwards of $110,000 per year in cities like San Francisco and New York, and even in other cities, designers earn a salary of around $70,000. You can therefore earn 85x the cost of this bootcamp in just your first year of employment!

Here are some job statistics for ֱ designers in the United States:

  • Can I get a refund if I’m not satisfied?
If you're unhappy with your bootcamp experience, you can inform us at any time and we'll do our best to find a resolution for you. If despite our best efforts, you still wish to quit the bootcamp, you can request a refund. To be eligible for the refund, you should request it within the first 14 days of the bootcamp, and you should have completed a maximum of 1 video session with your mentor.

Beyond the 14 days, we don't process refunds. However, if there's anything we can improve or fix for you, you will have our dedicated support right through the bootcamp.
  • What design tools will I learn in the bootcamp?
The bootcamp does not aim to teach you how to use a particular design tool or software. This is because there are tons of free and official resources and tutorials you can use to learn design tools of your choice. We recommend that you learn how to use 1-2 design tools before you join the bootcamp. This way, you can dive straight into working on your portfolio after you've become comfortable with the technical interface you want to use.

Since the bootcamp comes with 5 hours of video chats with your mentor and 12+ rounds of feedback, you should conserve these interactions and use them for advice and guidance on your projects or your career, rather than use these valuable sessions to learn how to use a design tool. That said, if you're stuck while creating your portfolio, you can always ask your mentor for assistance.

The bootcamp doesn't insist on using any specific tools, so you're free to use whichever tools you're comfortable with. The bootcamp also includes discounts from certain design tools, so you're free to make use of them too!
  • Will I be able to take the bootcamp even if English is not my first language?
The mentors are all English speakers,  and as long as you’re able to have conversations in English, you’ll benefit from the full extent of the bootcamp without a doubt. The skills the bootcamp will give you are not language-dependent. You can use what you learn in the bootcamp to design a portfolio in any language, since the practical skills you learn will be transferable across languages and cultures.

Even when it comes to preparing for the ֱ job search or managing job interviews, your mentor will teach you how to put yourself across to a recruiter in the best way. It's not about saying the right things—but about learning how to build your advantage and learning strategies to negotiate and present your skills. You’ll be able to learn this information from the mentor in English, and then use it in interview situations in your local language, so in other words, you won't lose out in any way.
  • How does the bootcamp line up with Interaction Design Foundation courses?
While the bootcamp doesn't require you to take any of the courses compulsorily, you're free to take any courses while you participate in the bootcamp. In fact, the courses are a great way to supplement the practical portfolio work you'll be doing in the bootcamp.

We've also mapped out resources available within the Interaction Design Foundation to the bootcamp's frameworks, so you'll know where to go if you need additional reading or resources on any topic.

You can also use the Build Your Portfolio projects located within certain Interaction Design Foundation courses as ideas for projects you can include in your portfolio, and your mentor can help you work on them.

If you ever want to pause the bootcamp to learn more about a specific area of ֱ design, or to revise the basics, you can do so with no extra costs.
